The Harold G. Hewitt Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Laboratories are located in state-of-the-art facilities in the Pharmacy/Biology building in the science quad of the University. Research is conducted in customized laboratories. Multiple autoclaves, tissue culture facilities, hood systems, and freeze-drying capabilities are available. The UConn High-Throughput Screening Facility is housed in the Department for researchers to identify novel small molecule modulators of a range of biological systems. It includes a multi-mode microplate reader, integrated microplate stacker for batch processing, and an automated liquid handler. The facility maintains a library of 150K small molecules for screening. Also available in Pharmaceutical Sciences are nano-ITC (isothermal titration calorimetry) and nano-DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) instruments. These are the most sensitive instruments available designed to address the needs of today’s life science researchers, particularly those engaged in drug discovery and development. NMR and Protein X-ray Crystallography facilities are also located in the building.
